Privacy & Data Retention

What we collect, how long we keep it, who can see it, and how to get it deleted. Last updated October 18, 2026.

The short version

Mesh data

Our observers listen to the same radio traffic any MeshCore radio can hear and send it to the analyzer and live map. From each packet we record:

Packets are deleted after 7 days. A node that hasn't been heard for 7 days is marked inactive. Its basic listing (name, key, last location) stays until it's heard again or removed.

The MeshTexasBot bot keeps its own records on the same schedule: messages, paths, and advert statistics are deleted after 7 days.

This data is public by nature: anyone with a radio in range can receive it, and other sites archive it too. Deleting our copy doesn't make it private. Treat public channels as public.

Observers

If you run an observer, it connects to our MQTT broker. The broker's logs include your observer's IP address and are overwritten within hours. The broker also keeps a small trust record for each observer's public key, used to block misbehaving clients, which doesn't include IP addresses. Observers also appear on the analyzer with their name and region.

Accounts and forms

These are kept until you ask us to delete them (see below).

This website

We count page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies, doesn't store your IP address, and doesn't follow you across other sites. We see totals only, like how many people read an article and which country or site they came from. We don't use ads or any other tracking scripts.

The site is served through Cloudflare, which processes visitors' IP addresses to deliver pages and block abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to filter out bots.

Backups

Our databases are backed up nightly to a second machine we own. Backups, including the live map's own snapshots, are deleted after 3 days. Nothing is copied to a third-party cloud.

Who can see it

The mesh data shown on the analyzer and live map is public by design. Everything else (account details, emails, host addresses, logs, and backups) is only accessible to MeshTexas administrators. We don't sell or share it.

Requests for data

We can only provide what we still have, and our retention limits run automatically every day. This page describes everything we keep.

Deleting your data

Email [email protected] and we'll delete your analyzer account, article comments, or host details.

Nodes are different. We can't delete a node in any lasting way, because it reappears the next time it's heard. What you can do:

Hiding a node only removes it from our displays. Its packets are still received, stored, and deleted after 7 days like everything else, and other people's maps and observers can still hear it.

Changes

If we change what we collect or how long we keep it, we'll update this page and post about it in Articles.
